CNSSP director receives state award

John Street, director of student services for the Central Nebraska Support Service Program (CNSSP) and Grand Island Public Schools, received the Distinguished Service Award recently from the Nebraska Association of Special Education Supervisors (NASES).

Street received the award at the association's spring conference April 15-April 16 in North Platte. NASES is an affiliate of the Nebraska Council of School Administrators. Members of Region IV of NASES nominated him for the award.

Street began his career in education in 1977 as a special education teacher in Chapman and will retire at the end of the 2009-2010 school year.
He was an educational consultant and program coordinator for GIPS and CNSSP from 1979 to 1986, then served as a supervisor of special education for GIPS and CNSSP until 2000. He has been director of student services for the two organizations since 2000.

Throughout his career, Street has participated on numerous committees for the Nebraska Department of Education, Council of Exceptional Children, and NASES. These committees have had local, state, regional, and national impact.

Street was NASES president during 2007-2008. As part of this role, he participated on the NASES Liaison Committee, the NASES Executive Board, and the Nebraska Council of School Administrators Executive Committee.

He has been actively involved in Grand Island organizations including the Elks Club (Scholarship Selection Committee), Central Nebraska Association of Retarded Citizens (ARC), and the Twisters Gymnastics Board of Directors. Also, he participates in community baseball and basketball teams.

According to the award nomination submitted for Street: "John Street is a true child/family advocate and educational leader. Always emphasizing straightforward fairness, honesty, and integrity, John has devoted his professional and personal life to children with disabilities and their families. John has been labeled a 'straight shooter' and a direct, non-nonsense communicator."

"A problem solver, John spends very little time laboring over words -- he rolls up his sleeves and tackles the hard issues that create barriers for children and their families. He often seems fearless as he tackles complicated out-of-home placements or much-needed services for children with mental health or developmental disabilities," the nomination said. "John is so well-versed in federal and state residency and educational laws that many local area service providers, agencies, and parent attorneys use him as a resource and sounding board."

"Not only has John been a child and family advocate, he has been a friend and mentor for numerous special educators, special education administrators, and Nebraska Department of Education staff in our state for many years," the nomination said.
