CNCS will give presentations about seatbelts at Engleman Elementary School

Central Nebraska Community Services staff will give presentations to students at Engleman Elementary School on Thursday, May 27, about proper seat belt usage, Engleman Counselor Sherry Jones said.

Central Nebraska Community Services received funding from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety to work with the rural schools and elementary schools in Hall County to increase seat belt usage and safe driving practices. The goal of the project, called "Hall County STARS," is to decrease crash fatalities and injuries.

CNCS staff worked with all kindergarten through fifth-grade students at Jefferson Elementary School on May 14 and at Howard Elementary School on May 17 concerning seat belt usage.

Students in kindergarten through second grade meet Buckle Bear and his brother Buddy. They help make Buckle Bear safe by "listening for the click." Third- through fifth-grade students learn how to ride safely and see the effects of not being buckled with a graphic demonstration using eggs. To measure the effectiveness of the education, pre- and post-seat belt observation surveys are completed at each school.
