Barr Middle School students will portray prominent people in history
History will become live when Barr Middle School students present the
seventh annual Person of Prominence Night starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday,
Jan. 8, and 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, said social studies teacher Greg
Morrow.
The Person of Prominence (POP) unit integrates all
three eighth-grade core teams and involves all curricular areas.
Matinee performances presented for fifth-grade students will begin at 9
a.m. Jan. 9 and 9 a.m. Jan. 11, Morrow said.
When guests arrive
at Barr on Person of Prominence Night, they will find a living timeline
formed by students dressed as prominent people, stretching from the
commons area, throughout the gym, and back to the commons again.
Student will pose wax museum style according to each selected Person of Prominence's place in history.
"As
guests approach the characters frozen in time, they place a small
donation in a container provided by each Person of Prominence. The
Person of Prominence then comes to life and shares a short speech. The
money collected during Person of Prominence night is then donated to a
local charitable organization chosen by the students," Morrow said.
The
project brings all eighth-grade students and teachers together and
allows them to incorporate their talents while working toward
identified achievement standards in all curricular areas, he said. It
also involves families and local businesses and gives students a sense
of the importance of volunteerism, because they donate the "fruits" of
their labor to local charitable organizations.
Each student
picks a Person of Prominence to study. The Person of Prominence can be
a person they learned or heard about in any of their classes ˘ a writer
from language arts, a mathematician from math class, a scientist from
science, or a historical figure from American Studies. Once a Person of
Prominence has been selected, students write reports in American
History classes, create multimedia presentations in instructional
technology classes, prepare short speeches, and deliver the speeches to
guests on Person of Prominence night.
The Person of Prominence nights are free and open to the public.
