Barr Middle School student wins school's National Geographic Bee competition

Barr Middle School eighth-grader Hayden Vahle won school-level competition in the National Geographic Bee on Jan. 18.

The school–level National Geographic Bee, at which students answered geography questions, was the first round in the 23nd annual National Geographic Bee, said Denise Pedersen, a social studies teacher at Barr. Vahle and other school winners in Nebraska take a written test. Up to 100 of the top scorers qualify to compete in the state National Geographic Bee on April 1.

Google is sponsoring this year’s Geography Bee, with thousands of schools in the United States and five U.S. territories participating. The state bee is the third level of the national competition, which began last fall with competitions in thousands of schools nationwide. The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state champions to participate in the national competition on May 24 and May 25. The first-place national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society, and a trip to the Galapagos Islands, courtesy of Lindblad Expeditions and the National Geographic Society.

People can test their geography knowledge with the GeoBee Challenge, an online geography quiz at www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee. The game poses 10 new questions daily.
