Barr Middle School student qualifies for Nebraska Geographic Bee

Barr Middle School seventh-grader Abbey Kutlas has qualified to participate in the Nebraska State Geographic Bee, part of the National Geographic Society's National Geography Bee.

Those taking part in the University of Nebraska-Omaha state bee competition on April 3 include Nebraska students in grades four through eight who won their respective school bees and earned top scores on a written exam prepared by the National Geographic Society.

The state bee is the third level of the national competition, which began last fall with competitions in thousands of schools nationwide. Kutlas qualified by competing within Barr Middle School and emerged as champion. She then took a written test in order to qualify for the state level and was one of the top 100 scorers in Nebraska.

Approximately 11,000 students participated in the geography bee in Nebraska, and only 100 qualify for the state bee.

A cash prize and an all-expenses-paid trip to the national finals in Washington, D.C., on May 19 and May 20 will be awarded to the state champion.

The school-level bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 21st annual National Geographic Bee.

Abbey Kutlas is the daughter of Joe and Ronna Kutlas of Grand Island.

Everyone can test their geography knowledge with the new GeoBee challenge, an online geography quiz at www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee, which poses 10 new questions a day and allows players to e-mail their score to friends and challenge them to do better.
