Barr Middle School student qualifies for Nebraska Geographic Bee

Barr Middle School sixth-grader Abbey Kutlas has qualified to participate in the Nebraska State Geographic Bee, part of the National Geographic Society's National Geography Bee.

Those taking part in the University of Nebraska-Omaha state bee competition include Nebraska students in grades four through eight who won their respective school bees and earned top scores on a written exam prepared by the National Geographic Society.

The state bee is the third level of the national competition, which began last fall with competitions in thousands of schools nationwide. Kutlas qualified by competing within Barr Middle School and emerged as champion. She then took a written test in order to qualify for the state level.

Approximately 11,000 students participated in the geography bee in Nebraska, and only 100 qualify for the state bee.
The bee will be April 4 on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Omaha. A cash prize and an all-expenses-paid trip to the national finals in Washington, D.C., will be awarded to the champion.

Abbey Kutlas is the daughter of Joe and Ronna Kutlas of Grand Island.
