Rationale and Supporting Data

The Dodge Elementary staff has been involved in implementing and making changes in the teaching of reading and writing in order to increase student achievement.  Guided Reading has played an integral part in this process.  Introducing a variety of comprehension strategies and asking questions at a higher level of thinking gives students many tools to be able to derive meaning from text.  Students have also been given more direct reading contact hours to practice skills while gaining the love of reading.

Improvement Strategies

    * Ensure a thorough understanding of Guided Reading processes and components, as well as use Comprehension Bridge and corresponding grade level graphic organizers from Literacy by Design.

Review and continue implementation of  The Daily Five by Boushey and Moser which fosters literacy independence in the elementary grades.

Review and share summarization strategies, from Rick Wormeli’s book Summarization in Any Subject on a regular basis with colleagues.

    * Increase reading comprehension by utilizing books labeled with comprehension strategies from Reading with Meaning by Debbie Miller.

    * Increase methods of providing feedback to students while setting clear objectives.

    * Provide opportunities for parent involvement in reading outside the school day.

Increase the level of questioning techniques using Blooms’ Taxonomy
